What is a Post-operative Knee Brace?

A post-operative knee brace, also known as a post-surgical knee brace or knee immobilizer, is a medical device designed to provide support, stabilization, and protection to the knee joint after knee surgery. These braces are used in various orthopedic procedures, such as knee ligament reconstruction (e.g., ACL or PCL surgery), knee arthroscopy, knee replacement surgery, and other knee surgeries.

The primary purpose of a post-operative knee brace is to:

  • Immobilize the knee
  • Provide stability
  • Minimize swelling
  • Protect surgical site
  • Support the healing process

Post-operative knee braces come in various designs and configurations and the type of post-operative knee brace prescribed depends on the specific surgical procedure, the surgeon's recommendations, and the patient's individual needs. Healthcare providers and orthopedic specialists will determine the appropriate type of brace, fit it to the patient, and provide guidelines for its use during the post-operative recovery period. Proper usage and adherence to post-operative instructions are crucial for a successful recovery and optimal outcomes.

Post-operative Knee Brace: What to expect when wearing

Wearing a post-operative knee brace is an important part of the recovery process following knee surgery. Here's what you can generally expect when wearing a post-operative knee brace:

Immobilization

The primary purpose of a post-operative knee brace is to immobilize the knee joint, preventing excessive movement. You can expect limited flexion (bending) and extension (straightening) of the knee, which is essential to protect the surgical site and allow for proper healing.

Stability

The brace provides stability to the knee, reducing stress on the surgical repair, surrounding tissues, and surgical implants. This stability is crucial for the success of the surgical procedure.

Comfort and Padding

Most post-operative knee braces come with padding on the inner surface to enhance comfort and reduce pressure points on the leg and knee. This padding helps prevent skin irritation during extended wear.
